As an Austin roofing company that has been around for over 47 years, we understand it’s important to give back to the area that we do business in. A few times a year we find nonprofit organizations that our team is passionate about and take a day or week to contribute. Most organizations we work with are local, and some with a national effort.
We wanted to share our experience with these organizations to show you the type of volunteer or donation effort you can make. We believe it’s vital to give back to your community whether you are a business like an Austin roofing company or a person. Most importantly, if we can all contribute to the wonderful nonprofit organizations Austin has to offer, we can work together to uplift the community we call home.
Drives are a convenient way to give back if you have a group of people in your network or business. We like to do drives as we have 30+ employees in our office and customers who drop by. Wilson Roofing invites employees and customers to come together and bring what they can to the office. We typically hold our drives around the holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, however, some nonprofit organizations, like the Central Texas Food Bank need donations year-round. Here are some of the other organizations we’ve held drives for or contributed to drives with.
The Central Texas Food Bank was established in Austin in 1982. Last year, the Central Texas Food Bank provided more than 54 million meals to Central Texas residents facing hunger. The last few years we have held food drives at our office prior to Thanksgiving and Christmas. It was a fun way to get everyone together to drop off food goods at work conveniently. However, the Central Texas Food Bank takes donations year-round and also takes volunteers. You can donate money on their website and even set a monthly donation. If you have a large group and will donate more than 1,500 lbs of food goods, the Central Texas Food Bank can pick it up. If you’re an individual with less than that, you can drop it off. Visit their website, for more information on the best ways of donating.
Every summer one of our biggest new construction clients, David Weekly Homes, holds a school supply drive for Helping Hand Home for Children. Every year, we have the opportunity to set up our drive box in the office for employees to donate, and then we drop it off at the David Weekly Homes drive. Helping Hand Home is the oldest and continuously operating residential childcare agency in Travis County. They give children who previously experienced physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, and abandonment a chance to reclaim their childhood. They do this through private and community support. Donate, volunteer, or foster a child. Find a list of items to donate or ways to volunteer here.
This year we were able to do a Toys for Tots toy drive at our office. We were able to donate dozens of toys from our team. The U.S. Marine Corps formed Toys for Tots as a nonprofit to collect and donate toys to the less fortunate at Christmas time. Toys for Tots drives are fun because you get to select new toys for the less fortunate. If you’re interested in hosting your own drive next year, or an individual donation, you can find out more on their website.
A couple of times a year we like to get our team together in person and do a volunteer event. It’s a fantastic way to contribute directly to an organization and also for team building. Additionally, it doesn’t hurt that it’s fun. There are so many opportunities to volunteer in Austin. Here are some of the organizations we’ve had experiences with, as an Austin roofing company, in recent years.
The Dog Alliance in Cedar Park is a nonprofit organization that has several programs and services. The Hounds for Heroes program provides service dogs to veterans and first responders who were disabled in the line of duty. The Bow Wow Therapy Dog program provides certified dogs and handlers. Addtionally, they also offer a variety of dog training courses and private lessons. They have a Drop and Go Day School along with summer camps. We had the opportunity to do “Clean the Green” at the Dog Alliance. We helped clean and maintain their grounds, pulled weeds, laid mulch, and cleaned windows. The cherry on top was that we got to play with puppies and dogs in training all day! The Dog Alliance is a fantastic organization to volunteer with or donate. You can visit their website to find a way to give back!
Keep Austin Beautiful is an organization that works to inspire and educate locals to come together and beautify our public spaces! This is a perfect organization to volunteer with as there is always something to do. If interested, you can register on their website for cleanups easily, as they have several openings in multiple locations. We had to opportunity to organize our own clean-up with our Wilson Roofing team. We were even able to choose our location. Our team decided to clean up our S Commons Ford Rd, as it’s the road our business is on along with residential homes. Everyone felt great after several hours of picking up dozens of pounds of trash along the busy street. More so, Keep Austin Beautiful even supplied us with trash bags and trash pickers.
Charity events are a wonderful way to get people together and build community around a cause. Over the years we have been grateful to have participated in several local events in Austin. All for organizations that are near and dear to our hearts. Because of this, we want to share two fairly recent events that we participated in.
The CASA Superhero Run is an annual event held by CASA. CASA of Travis County is an organization that “promotes and protects the best interest of children who have experienced abuse or neglect by empowering volunteers to advocate for their safety, well-being, and for opportunities to thrive.” The Superhero Run is a fundraising event where you have the opportunity to dress up as your favorite superhero and race in a 5k. However, the event is not just about the race. Dozens of businesses set up themed booths for kids and families to enjoy. In September of 2022, we had a booth at the CASA Superhero Run and participated in the 5k. Our booth was face-painting and we were able to give dozens of children their dream artwork on their faces! Also, our owner and president Taylor Wilson, and his wife were able to run in the race. This event was super fun and most importantly it raised a lot of money for CASA. We were sad that we had to miss the 2023 event. If you’re interested in participating in next year’s event, keep checking their website closer to the race.
The John Lockhart Foundation is an organization that supports vulnerable children in the Austin area, share a passion for local music, and raise awareness around colon cancer. The organization was created in 2020 by friends and family of the late John Lockhart. John was an Austin musician for over 30 years. The charity Golf Tournament is a fun event that we’ve sponsored the past couple of years to benefit the Center for Child Protection. It’s a fun event full of golf, food, and community. We were grateful to have sponsored it as a local Austin roofing company.
