As a roofing company, we’ve had experience with customers not wanting to share their insurance estimates with us. Should you show a roofing contractor your insurance estimate?
At Wilson Roofing, not sharing your estimate ultimately limits our ability to help you get what you need from your insurance company and get the most out of the work you need done.
Some homeowners believe that by not sharing their insurance policy, they can save money on the bid. They believe that saving money for their insurance company will help their premiums go down. This is not the case. Get the most out of your insurance company. Replace or repair your roof as needed with the highest quality products possible.
You should trust the roofing company that you choose to replace your roof. A trustworthy roofing company will work with your insurance company to ensure you get what you pay for. At Wilson Roofing, we’re experts in insurance and have employees who have even been on the other side. We will work to ensure your estimate covers what you need with the right products for your home.
We’re going to go over a few reasons why you should share your insurance estimate when you’re getting bids from roofing companies.
The top reason you should show your insurance estimate to roofing companies is to ensure the adjustor catches everything. At Wilson Roofing, we see it all the time where adjustors leave something off by mistake. This can happen because they are not roofers by trade. Sometimes they do this intentionally to reduce their financial responsibilities.
We’ll have to do an additional shipment if an insurance company approves for fewer roofing squares than needed. Other times, they can miss a gutter or an overhang. Additional expenses will be charged to the homeowner. The roofing company could have worked to cover everything had they been shown the insurance estimate.
If your insurance does a good job of covering everything, you might be able to get an upgrade. You can qualify for upgrades if your bid comes back with a healthy margin for the roofing company. This can include better shingles, warranties, etc. Whereas, if the roofing company doesn’t see the insurance paperwork then they can’t calculate upgrades because it might come in too high when they bid. At Wilson Roofing, we love to offer upgrades that will protect your roof even longer if your insurance covers it.
Insurance can be complicated. For example, there is ACV (Actual Cost Value), RCV (Replacement Cost Value), and then there’s a deductible. However, if you share your insurance estimate with your roofing company, they can walk you through the payment structure and help you understand how the payment will come through. Insurance won’t be able to help as much on that front. At Wilson Roofing, we’re experts at insurance and love to help our customers understand the ins and outs of their insurance plans.
In 2019 Texas passed House Bill 2102 which made it illegal for contractors to waive or help homeowners avoid paying their homeowners insurance deductibles. This law was put in place to prevent corrupt roofers from doing this just to secure contracts. These types of roofers are out to cut corners so they can make the most money while doing a poor job. If a contractor offers to waive a deductible, you should contact your insurance company and then report it to the Texas Attorney’s General’s Consumer Protection Hotline at (800)-621-0508.
