Spring is here! This means it’s time to do spring cleaning and prepare your home for the upcoming weather. Spring weather in Austin is typically wet with frequent storms and the occasional hail storm. You can prepare for these upcoming storms through expert roofing solutions.
Your roof is the protector of your home. Maintain your roof and get it repaired as needed, and it should help stop leaks and further damage during a hail storm. Get annual roof inspections to ensure your roof is in its best shape.
Austin weather in the spring can be unpredictable. In recent years, major hail storms have come in March and late spring. These hail storms brought baseball-sized hail that impacted thousands of homes in the greater Austin area.
Luckily, this spring forecast is showing less hail storms and high winds than usual! However, that doesn’t mean we won’t have any at all.
Hail and high wind can cause serious damage to your roof leading to leaks. The best prevention of damage from storms is to ensure your roof is in the best shape possible. If your roof has received any damage from a previous storm, it should be repaired promptly. Storms will cause any previous damage to get worse which can lead to an expensive reroof or home repairs. Even high winds can cause shingles (especially damaged shingles) to rip off exposing your roof deck to the elements. We offer free inspections to homeowners that have been impacted by a hail storm or severe weather. So, go ahead and book an inspection if a storm with high winds or hail has passed through your area. You’ll be happy you did when another storm rolls through.
If it’s been more than a year since your last roof inspection, book one for the spring. The spring is a perfect time for annual maintenance. If you don’t get your roof inspected after major storms, you should at least get annual inspections. An annual inspection will ensure your roof has no major wear and tear or damage. This is especially important if your roof is more than 15-20 years old.
A free inspection from Wilson Roofing is an easy process. One of our dedicated roofing advisors will schedule an appointment with you. They will address any concerns you may have and get on your roof for a general inspection. They will get back to you with a bid if you have any damage or further suggestions.
After getting your roof inspected, more items should be addressed to prevent damage from spring storms.
You should clean your gutters at least twice a year in the spring and fall. An early spring clean will ensure all the leaves and debris in your gutters are clear so rainfall can flow clearly into the spouts. If you’re ready to clean your gutters out on your own, you’ll need a few things. You’ll need an extension ladder, garden hose with a spray nozzle, scoop, and rubber gloves. Position the ladder and use a gutter scoop or any plastic scoop to remove leaves or debris. You can use a paper bag to put the debris in. Once all the debris is removed, use a garden hose to flush out the gutters and downspouts.
Moss can grow on any area of your roof that is usually damp and shaded. Moss damages asphalt shingles and other roofing materials. Over time, moss can grow and widen gaps, causing moisture to be trapped against the roof. Moss is particularly prevalent in the fall and winter. So, the spring season is the best time to check for and remove moss. Architectural Digest provides a detailed guide on how to remove moss from your roof.
In early spring you should asses the trees around your home. See if there are any dead, damaged, or overgrown branches. Overhanging branches on your roof can be a serious problem during a high wind or hail storm.
